[Dragon Boat Festival Firework Show]. I'm fortunate enough to live in a city that produces fireworks and subsequently displays them weekly from an island Called Zhuzizhoutou on the Xiangjiang River. Because of the frequency of the shows I have been able to take photographs from various angles throughout the city. Recently this has been one of my favorite shots because of the silhouette of people along the river, the alignment of the passing boats, and the effect of the red light on the smoke and water.I consider this to be a sense of place because it is unique to Hunanese Culture and is engrained in heart of Changsha's identity. Location: Changsha, Hunan, China. (Photo and caption by Andrew Crane/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

[The look]. While I was visiting Steve Irwin's amazing Zoo in Queensland Australia, I was lucky enough to get one of those [right place at the right time] images. I was setting up my lighting for the shot of the snake and was just waiting for his head to come out from the branch and around to my camera when this girl came right up the glass. The snakes neck swung right around to meet her stare and I shot this frame! Such a perfect moment! (Photo and caption by Elaine Barker/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

[Carnevale di Venezia]. Each year, the Carneval in Venice is celebrated prior to lent. History depicts a celebration whereby revellers would enjoy several weeks of partying to rid their pantry of meat prior to 40 days of fasting. Today the traditions continue with street parties, balls and events whereby revellers dress in a costume and mask. The City of Venice puts on a grand show of events and activities, including masked and costumed folk who willingly pose for the camera in the most scenic of backgrounds. [Star Gazers]. On one of the last days while my family and I were on the island, the night happened to be very clear and I decided to try some long exposure shots. We got to Ahu Tongariki at about 10pm. When we stepped out of the car, my sister became very paranoid, and even screamed when a nearby lighthouse/tower lit up. I even got a bit paranoid in the dark with the hundreds year old moai, but everything turned out fine. The photo was a single 30 minute exposure. There was a bit too much sensor noise though. Next time I'll try to take a series of 30 second exposure and stack them. Location: Rapa Nui/Easter Island. (Photo and caption by Kevin Hu/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)
