[Connemara Ponies at Dusk]. While driving through Ireland's Connemara region at the end of a dreary rainy day, two Connemara ponies unexpectedly ran alongside our car and began to play. I slammed on the brakes and started shooting through the passenger window while the ponies put on a show as if they knew we were the only people around for miles. Perfect ending to an amazing family vacation. (Photo and caption by Joshua Boyd/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

[Haitians]. In August 2012, during a family vacation aboard a cruise, our ship came across a makeshift boat of Haitians, stranded at sea. They were attempting to reach the United States, but with a hurricane approaching, their lives were at a major risk. The crew of our ship explained to the Haitians their situation since they were unaware of the weather to come, and offered to rescue them. After the Haitians accepted the offer, they boarded the cruise into safety and were turned over to authorities at our next port. Location: Caribbean Sea. [Leopard Seal – Antarctica]. During a zodiac cruise in Neko Harbour, Antarctica we approach a leopard seal resting on an ice floe. As we came closer his initial indifference to our presence was replaced by a warning growl. [White Sharks Can't Jump?] This great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) struck directly from below with such force that it leapt entirely clear of the water. Gansbaai, South Africa, where this image was taken, is one of the only places in the world where the sharks exhibit this behaviour. Conditions for high speed photography were difficult as the light was low, but the setting sun imparted a beautiful golden glow to the shark's body, accentuating the size of its enormous pectoral fin. [Mother?] This photo was taken when I was invited to a pastor's house in Harbu Chulule, Ethiopia. The paster was not in but his wife and family friends insisted on making me coffee. The young girl's mother was a seamstress (a common trade in a rural village) and earned a living from mending other people's clothing. She had stepped out of the house to fetch the coffee and immediately her daughter ran up from the back room and started crying. Mother's carry their children everywhere they go. A mother's bond to her children here in Ethiopia is stronger than any western civilization I have witnessed. (Photo and caption by Aidan Ware/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)
