It was announced Tuesday that Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez had died of cancer. During more than 14 years in office, Chavez routinely challenged the status quo at home and internationally. He polarized Venezuelans with his confrontational and domineering style, yet was also a masterful communicator and strategist who tapped into Venezuelan nationalism to win broad support, particularly among the poor. He's seen in an undated family photo in Barinas; serving time in the Yare II prison near Caracas; waving to supporters during a government march in 2002 commemorating the anniversary of Venezuelan democracy; and with his daughters, Maria Gabriela and Rosa Virginia, in Havana, Cuba in February.
