Route engineer Richard Winter stands in front of a pile of road salt at the Birchanger Depot on November 8, 2011 near Bishops Stortford, England. The newly built salt dome at Birchanger Depot, located next to the M11 motorway, holds 5500 tonnes of road salt which is enough to fill 550 gritter lorry loads. The salt is used to prevent roads from icing over during winter months. The Highways Agency is asking all motorists to be prepared for poor conditions whilst driving this winter by carrying maps, an ice scraper, de-icer, torch with spare batteries, warm clothes and blankets.
