Redneck Games

[Redneck is a historically derogatory slang term used in reference to poor white farmers in the Southern United States. It is similar in meaning to cracker (especially regarding Georgia and Alabama), hillbilly (especially regarding Appalachia and the Ozarks), and white trash (but without the last terms suggestions of immorality).

In recent decades, the term expanded its meaning to mean bigoted, loutish, and opposed to modern ways, and has often been used to attack Southern conservatives and racists. At the same time, some Southern whites have reclaimed the word, using it with pride and defiance as a self-identifier.

The Redneck Games are held in East Dublin, Georgia annually. The games were started by General Manager for WQZY-FM «Y96»; Mac Davis in response to a comment made by the media; that when the 1996 Olympic Games went to Atlanta, it would be held by a group of rednecks.

Taking offense to this, Mac Davis and some locals set up the annual Redneck Games to reinforce the stereotype the media held.

In 2001, Drew Scott of Wild Country 96.5 [borrowed] the games to set up a fundraising event for the Franklin County NY Make-A-Wish Foundation. Each year, these games have increased in size of the event, crowds and monies raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 2010, marking the 9th year of the Annual Redneck Games in Malone, NY, the entertainment is Cledus T. Judd]. – Wikipedia
