    China's Qindao Coast

Tourists play at a beach covered by a thick layer of green algae in Qingdao, China, on July 3, 2013. A large quantity of non-poisonous green seaweed, enteromorpha prolifera, hit China's Qingdao coast last month. More than 20,000 tons of such seaweed has been removed from the city's beaches. This has now become an annual summer event. (Photo by Whitehotpix/ZumaPress.com)...

    The Awkward Years Project

[The Awkward Years Project highlights the time in our lives when we felt the most awkward. Some of us had crazy hair, glasses, and/or braces. Some fell victim to the fashion trends of the decade. And some of us struggled even deeper than others realize. This project is a before-and-after transition showing how far the subjects have come and who they turned out to be]. – Awkward Years Project. Second Place Winner: [Thunderstorm at False Kiva]. I hiked out to these ruins at night hoping to photograph them with the Milky Way, but instead a thunderstorm rolled through, creating this dramatic image. – Max Seigal. National Geographic Traveler Director of Photography Dan Westergren, one of this year's judges, shares his thoughts on the second place winner: [This photo combines two different scenes into one: the small kiva in a cliff dwelling and the grand vista of Canyonlands National Park across the valley. [Spider Dew and Damself Reflection] by Photographer Uda Dennie

The amazing images, which show the balls of water reflecting an array of colours and even other insects, were snapped by photographer Uda Dennie in his garden. One of the massive droplets even stayed in shape for about a minute before the spider scurried off. Dennie, 33, from Batam Island, Indonesia, said: [I was really surprised to get such amazing pictures – it was really wonderful. I have a real passion for macro photography and after lots of trial and error I'm now able to produce good images – perseverance really paid off]. (Photo by Uda Dennie)...
