[Poznan is a city on the Warta river in west-central Poland. It is among the oldest cities in Poland, and was one of the most important centres in the early Polish state, whose first rulers were buried at Poznańs cathedral. It is sometimes claimed to be the first capital of the kingdom of Poland. The name Poznań probably comes from a personal name Poznan and would mean "Poznans town". It is also possible that the name comes directly from the verb poznać, which means "to get to know" or "to recognize". It may simply mean "known town".
Poznań is now Polands fifth largest city. Poznań has many historic buildings and sights, mostly concentrated around the Old Town and other parts of the city centre.
